Adoption Processing

Step 1. Select Your New Pet

Spend some time with the animal at the shelter to get acquainted. Consider if the animal is the right breed for your family and how you will make introductions to pets at home. There are information packets at the shelter to help you!

Step 2. If the Animal is Not Yet Available for Adoption

If the mandated holding period is not up yet, up to three names can be entered on a "wait list." On the date of availability, at 10 a.m., the pet will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis to those on the list. The animal must show favorable results from the behavioral test before it can be adopted.

Step 3.  Complete Paperwork and Pay the Fees

Complete the
Adoption Application Form (also available at the shelter). The adoption process takes about an hour.  Renters should bring a copy of their lease showing that pets are allowed. Home owners should check their insurance policies about breed restrictions.

Adoption f
ees vary depending on the type of animal and spay/neuter status:

  • Spay or neuter services
  • One (1) year license
  • Microchip with registration
  • Vaccinations (DHPP, Bortella, rabies for cats and dogs*, FVRCP)

*Puppies and kitten do not receive rabies vaccines or licenses until they reach four months of age. At the time of adoption, a rabies voucher will be issued which is only good at the low cost rabies clinics held first Wednesday of every month at the shelter. A license will be issued at the time at the clinic.

Step 4. Spay/Neuter Surgery, Then Bring Your New Pet Home!

Once the adoption is approved, the spay/neuter surgery may be necessary before the animal can come home. However, this generally takes only one business day. If no surgery is required, you may take your new pet home immediately!
