Found Pets: How to find the pet's owner

  1. Download the Found Animal Form (Word or PDF) and bring it into the shelter, along with any flyers. If you wish to submit the form on-line, email County Animal Care and ask for an electronic form to be sent to you.

  2. Post fliers around your area.

  3. Notify shelters that you have the animal in case owners contact the shelters- most local shelters have found cards you can post.

  4. Notify local vets.

  5. Post an ad in the Sacramento Bee Sacramento Bee's Online Classifieds Placement.
If you can't care for the animal:
Contact area shelters. Many 24-hour veterinarian hospitals will take animals after hours until a local shelter is open.

If the animal is injured:
Contact veterinarians in your area or local shelter immediately. Most 24-hour emergency vets will take stray injured animals after hours and provide care.
