How To License Your Pet

In person: Visit the Shelter or a participating veterinarian with proof of rabies vaccination and alteration (if you have one) and pay the fees. To save time, print and fill out forms in advance. Licenses must be paid in cash, debit, Visa or MasterCard. All "reduced licenses" must be obtained in person at the Shelter.

Pet licenses can also be obtained at the Department of Neighborhood Services, North Service Center at 6015 Watt Avenue, North Highlands CA 95660 and at the East Area Service Center 5229-B Hazel Ave (Near Madison)
Fair Oaks, CA 95628. Payment by check only at the Service Center.

By mail:
Checks may be used to pay through the mail. Print and fill out the form for a new Animal License and mail to: Sacramento County Animal Care and Regulation, 3839 Bradshaw Road, Sacramento CA 95827.

To report an animal as deceased and inactivate your pet's license, please contact the Animal Shelter at CountyAnimalCare@saccounty.net.

License Renewals

Online: Renewals Only

In person: Visit the Shelter or a participating veterinarian with proof of rabies vaccination and alteration (if you have one) and pay the fees.

By mail: If you have your renewal card, please send that back with payment, proof of rabies (if expired) and spay/neutering proof (if applicable and not currently reflected as such in our system). Please make checks payable to: Sacramento County.

If you have lost your renewal card, please send in a completed application and indicate that the license is a renewal. To help expedite the processing, please indicate your pet's license number on the application or check memo. Download a copy of the pet licensing application.

Cost of Licenses for Residents of the Unincorporated Area of Sacramento County:
All owned
cats and dogs over the age of 4 month must be licensed, spayed/neutered (altered) to avoid incurring a higher licensed fee, and must be rabies vaccinated.  Fees for licensing are available here...

Exemptions:
Animals certified in writing by a licensed veterinarian to be too young, too old, or generally not healthy enough for Spay/Neuter surgery, may receive an exemption and obtain a license for $15. For young animals, a letter from the veterinarian stating the animal is too young can serve as proof of eligibility. When the license is renewed, the owner can bring proof of spay/neuter and pay the altered fee of $15 for one to three years.

Reduced Unaltered Fee: $45.00

The reduced license is available to competition dogs and cats and does not allow the animal to breed. Any animal that is bred must have a regular unaltered license. Learn more whether your animal meets the requirements for a reduced unaltered license and how to purchase one here.
