Our Department services the County by administering the County's land use planning programs:
- County Wide Planning services: Maintains and updates Sacramento County's General Plan pursuant to state law mandates. Implements General Plan related open space initiatives such as the South Sacramento Habitat Conservation Plan.
- Specific and Community Planning services: Develops community-based plans for proposed new growth areas, established communities, infill developments and commercial corridors.
- Current Planning and Zoning services: Processes and makes recommendations on all applications for the development of land involving a discretionary action, which includes applications processed through the Zoning Administrator, the Subdivision Review Committee, the Community Planning Commission, the County Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors. Reviews building permits for conformance with the zoning code. Provides the general public with information, answers and resources concerning development requirements.

There are other services provided by the Sacramento County that in other counties and cities may be part of the Planning Department. In Sacramento County, these services are provided by other County departments:
- Department of Environmental Review and Assessment (DERA) - DERA implements the provisions of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and the National Environmental Policy Act as they apply to Sacramento County. DERA prepares and processes environmental documents for all projects initiated by various county departments and all projects initiated by the private sector within the County that require public agency approval, including applications for the development of land.
- Code Enforcement Division, Department of Neighborhood Services - The Code Enforcement Division enforces housing, zoning and vehicle abatement laws. Code Enforcement is the primary enforcement division for Sacramento County's zoning code in the unincorporated area, including all land use (residential, agricultural and commercial uses), building development standards, signage and more.
- Building Inspection Division (BID), Department of Engineering - BID issues building permits and provides plan review and field inspection services for all private development building projects within the unincorporated area of the Sacramento County.
