Multi-Family Recycling Requirements 

 

SWA Ordinance No. 20, Title IV, requires that multi-family dwellings with 5 or more units and who subscribe to ten (10) cubic yards a week or greater of garbage collection service must recycle designated recyclable materials from their garbage. This applies to multi-family dwellings located in the unincorporated areas of Sacramento County and in the City of Sacramento. The requirements for recycling include the following:

  1. Keep designated recyclable materials separate from the garbage. SWA 4.01.050A.(1)
  2. Subscribe to a recycling service that collects recyclable materials. SWA 4.01.050A.(2)
  3. Enter into a written service agreement with a Franchised Waste Hauler or Authorized Recycler. SWA 4.01.050A.(3); OR,
  4. Complete a self-hauling form for all self-hauling activities. SWA 4.01.050A.(4)
  5. Notify and instruct tenants by explaining in writing what recyclable materials are to be separated and how to separate recyclable materials. SWA 4.01.050B.
  6. Provide documentation that recyclable materials generated onsite are being taken to a recycling facility and not to a landfill for proper disposal. SWA 4.01.050C.
