Hazardous Waste Removal

Keeping the Public Safe

The SACDOT Hazardous Materials Team has four goals for its program to remove hazardous waste from the roadway:

  • Protect the Public.
  • Prevent materials from entering the waterway.
  • Promote the safe handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Partner with other agencies in the prevention and mitigation of hazardous events.

The Hazardous Materials Team responds to any Hazardous Material incident within the County right-of-way, including service to the City of Rancho Cordova.  An incident could include abandoned drums, spills on the roadway, dumping into waterways or drain inlets, hypodermic needles, and traffic control for multi-agency response.

Operational Procedures

Hazardous Material staff responds to incidents when reported by citizens, County crews, or other agencies such as Fire Department, CHP Sheriff's Department or Environmental Management.  Incident responses follow the following procedures:

  • Deny entry to protect the public for safety.
  • Determine material type (Oil, Fuels, Hypodermic Needles, etc.)
  • Properly remove and dispose of the material.
  • Coordinate with and assist Fire and Environmental Management Departments when the material cannot be identified, or exceeds the scope of our responsibility.
