Sacramento County's sweepers are a vital part of SACDOT operations that cleans approximately 25,000 miles of streets and removes over 5,000 cubic yards of debris each year from our roadways. In conjunction with nighttime sweeping of major streets, the regular sweeping program covers 200 miles of selected bicycle lanes, residential sweeping on a rotating basis, and clean up of auto accidents and hazardous material spills. In addition, leaf sweeping is conducted in the winter months in an effort to clean streets and drainage inlets.
Why wasn't sweeping completed in front of my home?
There are many reasons why the sweeper may not have been able to remove debris from your street. Most often, it's because items such as cars, bicycles, toys, basketball hoops and refuse containers are blocking the roadway. Vehicles parked too close to each other for the sweeper to maneuver between them is another cause. Low hanging trees and shrubs can prevent sweepers from cleaning in front of your home as well.
What can you do to help street sweepers?
Keeping the roadway in front of your house free of large objects and obstructions is the best way to assist street sweeping crews' clean up efforts. Large sticks and branches will clog and jam the sweepers' operating systems. Use your Green Waste Containers.
What about sweeping up leaves?
During the winter months, County street sweeping efforts focus on leaf removal to help keep stormdrains clear and prevent flooding. Please note that street sweepers cannot pick up piles of leaves. Leaves from in front of residential properties should be placed in Green Waste containers. Leaves that are left in piles in front of homes or businesses will not be removed by sweeper trucks.
Safety precautions near sweepers
Be sure to keep a safe distance between you and the sweeper at all times. Try to avoid maneuvering around sweeper trucks; move off to the side of the road until you are sure it is safe to continue. Do not ride, run or play near the trucks. Lastly, keep children a safe distance from the sweepers.
FYI
SACDOT is committed to minimizing pollution and doing our part for the environment. In addition to using Regenerative Air Sweepers that are capable of removing fine particulates that can pose a threat to creeks and rivers, SACDOT's street sweepers have been modified with diesel particulate filters, which meets California Air Quality standards.
