Kiefer Landfill

Kiefer Landfill is the primary municipal solid waste disposal facility in Sacramento County. It is the only landfill facility in Sacramento County permitted to accept household waste from the public. Waste is accepted from the general public, businesses and private waste haulers. The landfill facility sits on 1,084 acres located near the intersection of Kiefer Boulevard and Grant Line Road. Currently 250 acres, the State permitted landfill is 660 acres in size and will be able to serve the regional waste disposal needs for many years to come.

Kiefer Landfill Wins Award!
The Kiefer Landfill Entrance Improvement Project has been awarded the 2008 Project of the Year in its respective category by the American Public Works Association, Sacramento Chapter. These award celebrate public works projects that demonstrate an overall excellence in design, outreach and management.

Holiday hours - The Kiefer Landfill closes at 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day and will be closed all day on Christmas Day (December 25, 2011) and all day on New Years Day (January 1, 2012).

Waste Loads must be covered
A new regional ordinance requires that all loads of material transported to local waste facilities to have protection from littering or to be covered with a tarp. This ordinance applies to all vehicles such as pick-up trucks, trailers, drop-boxes and packer trucks. The penalty for non-compliance is $75 citation (plus court costs).

Unloading Materials
Customers must unload all materials as instructed by Landfill employees. There are several different locations for unloading materials. Follow the signs for the landfilling tipping area or recycling areas.

Fee and Materials Acceptance Changes at Kiefer Landfill Effective July 1, 2008

  • Weighed rates for "Normal Refuse" at Kiefer Landfill will be $30 per ton
  • Weighted rates for loads that include five (5) or more mattresses and/or box springs will be $100 per ton
  • No fee will be charged for the first two large appliances with a maximum of two units per vehicle per day. The fee for additional units will continue to be $20 each.
  • Kiefer Landfill accepts anti-freeze, motor oil and latex paint (limit 15 gallons per County resident per day) and car batteries.

  • We accept waste from all jusrisdictions at the Kiefer Landfill at no difference in cost to the customer. Customers need not be Sacramento County residents to use the facility.
