Universal wastes are hazardous wastes that are generated by several sectors of society, rather than a single industry or type of businesses. Hazardous wastes contain harmful chemicals, which, if put in the trash may harm people or an environment. Common Universal wastes include: Batteries, Electronic Devices, Electronic Switches and Relays, Fluorescent tubes/bulbs, Mercury Gages, Mercury Added Novelties, Mercury Therometers, Non-Empty Aerosal Cans, Pilot Light Sensosr and Thermostats.
Effective February 8, 2006, these kinds of universal wastes are no longer allowed in garbage containers and must be taken to a household hazardous waste collection or recycling facility.
